Are your serial ports configured correctly (dmesg)? What port/IRQ is your modem connected to? What /dev device are you pointing tip & kermit at (l /dev/cua??)? How is the port set up (stty </dev/cua??)? Your first concern has to be getting to see the current modem config. You say that it works half the time... what program is making it work ? Is it ppp ? It is _very_ odd that kermit & tip can't connect to it. Does kermit hang ? If so, have you tried doing a ^c ? Are you using the cua?? devices ?
