How do I tell routed to leave my default route alone? Is : it with a command option, or perhaps something in a : conf file? You must have your default route as 'static'. If you run "netstat -r", and check the FLAGS column for the default route, you should have an S there. Personally, I can't see how you can get a non-static default. You should be running with the -q flag only. Maybe if you're running with the -g option, it may delete it ???? : 2. Why do I need routed? ( Currently I'm running without it. ) routed listens for RIP type traffic and tweaks your routing tables accordingly. If you use the -s flag, it will advertise its routing tables to all local interfaces. It's only really needed in -q mode if you're directly connected to more than one router. If you're only connected to one, you can just have a default to that router and do away with routed. : 3. If I *do* need some kind of routing daemon, is gated a : better choice? Yep. routed will do well if you just have a lan & have a ppp link to the outside world. If you have anything more interresting plugged into the back of your machine, use gated. : Thanks in advance, : Please reply via email if possible Can't - I've no direct connection to the internet at the moment, just a non-IP dialup to my home machine. : Cheers, : Andrew : ( Opinions are my own... not those any employer past or present. ) -- Brian <brian@awfulhak.demon.co.uk> Don't _EVER_ lose your sense of humour....
