I don't understand what "the second ppp0 option" is.  Can you try
describing this differently ?
ppp0 is an interface.  cuaa0 is a device.  It's up to you to connect
the two, so there should be no concept of 'ppp0 using only cuaa0'

Can you use your modem with cu, tip or kermit ?
