There have been several 3D libraries out there, but not of the greatest utility.
There was Dore from Stardent/Kubuta, a Phigs-like language, VOGL implementing SGI GL (pre-OpenGl),
X3D something on XWindows, etc.  I believe the poster is looking for something of breakthrough
quality like Linux was to the UNIX world.
