I know that the 8mm Exabytes both the 8200 and the 8500 have upgradeable microcode, I don't know if the 4mm series does but I would think it does. Also, call Exabyte, their amazingly knowledgable and are not anti-Unix, pro Windoze fortunately. Also, try running the tape drive in asynchronous mode, I believe there is a jumper on the 1522 for that. I take it the usual SCSI stuff like termination is checked?
