Indeed, and it keeps away a lot of people from using *BSD.
In fact I've been running Linux and stayed away for 2 years from *BSD
because the developers seemed hostile and unkind. The Linux developers
are quite different. I don't want to run software from people that I
dislike.
Only recently I got the impression that the FreeBSD camp has
normalized somewhat, and today I run FreeBSD.
I am sure that other people (subconsiously) have the same
considerations, and that people are kept away from using *BSD by
arguments like this.
