"date" will set the time.

Note you may need to do a "clock" command to set the hardware clock as well.
This shouldn't affect the system per se, unless it goes down and comes back
up.  (the system time is set from the hardware clock.)

(This is under Linux)
date -s "whatever the date is"
clock -w
