I've had some of this recently as well. I still haven't quite pinned
it down, but it seems that there are some problems setting the
configuration below a RAM address of DFFFF. The program DIAGNOSE will
fail the RAM test (but not normally claim that the RAM is in use by
something else). However, it looks as if this is related to other
boards in the system - I have found that the diagnostic will find the
RAM at D000 with one kind of IDE controller installed but not with
another, with one kind of VGA card but not with another (Trident
TVGA8900C with IRQ 2 disabled). I was trying the same config that you
mention, but was unable to get it to work with the ``wrong'' IDE or
VGA board.

The standard diag program won't set the WD8003E config beyound DFFF,
but the newer CMC EZSETUP program will - it will also show you that
the WD8003E generates one wait state. I have been unable to get it to
work at all without the wait state.

All in all, my favourite board. Give me an NE2000 any time.
