If there are to manualpages with the same name (esp. smail(5) and smail(8), section 5 is for File Formats and section 8 is for System Administartion) then a man smail shows the page from section 8 (because this is the main page). If you want information about file formats type man 5 smail. (the example with smail will only work if you have the port smail installed.
