I was on vacation last week and may have missed something here (I
thought our system would save stuff for 10 days, guess I was wrong.)

My queues don't actually cause anything to be printed, so I guess they
are job queues.  One of the queues sends the resulting file to another
machine from which it is actually plotted.  This was done because the
software to interpret the PostScript was available for a Sun and the
best hardware to connect to the plotter was available for an RS6000.
