Ditto on the above. Spent a solid 15 hours installing, removing,
varifying instructions, installing.removing,varifying...........
I tried both release 2.1 and snap 6/12 and got different results
from each.
Allocated 500m using fips(WD 1220EIDE)and had no problems with the
floppy raw or booting the install disk. The installation went well
up until the point in which it was time to select an installation
media. Tried the FTP using the address info provided from serv. prov.
modem dialed out fine but once I returned to the main PPP menu and
pressed return, it would stop without any modem lights blinking
to confirm that the FTP sight had been looked for. Debugged, and
got varying responses, mostly "protocal rejected". I did manage to
connect once and it looked like it was going to go but it quit.
After that I was unable to replicate whatever it was that allowed
me to connect.
Decided the FTP was over my head and proceeded to download
the bin onto a dos partition and try the other method. That was
when I ran into a range of problems that centered around writing
to the drive. Watching the debug, it seemed the dos mounted ok and the
files were found(checksum ok) however, when it attempted to write
to the BSD mount, it would write some and then quit.
Gave up on 2.1. Downloaded image for 6/12 snap. Floppy booted
up ok, menus fine up until "select installation medium" I chose
FTP. However I didn't make it very far because the PPP portion
of the program would completely lock whenever I tried to access
the modem(exact modem, ports, etc as previous install attempt)
Decided that the FTP install was over my head and proceeded to
download 6/12 bin. Same problems as above.
I respect what you guys at FreeBSD are doing. I've spent the past year
muttering about "how there should be some kind of better OS" and
I think FreeBSD is where it is. I would really like to try it
have heard a lot of good things about it. Unfortunately, it
appears this OS is targeted for a more advanced group of users
who know what to do when prompted with terminology that is familiar
to them. Believe it or not, there are people interested in BSD who
don't posses a bachelor's in CS. I know it's not easy to program
automated install procedures for the gamut of hardware that is
out there, but if one was figured out, a lot of us would be grateful.
Thanks
Jim Kelly
