I found an ugly workaround to this and a few other video card problems was to boot DOS, start Windows where I had the Windows' Stealth driver loaded, and then re-boot unix and re-start the X server. (Un?)fortunately, this generally seemed to work. However, if my machine ever crashed while I was running X, I would have to repeat the entire process. Before I initially created an Xconfig, I had to use Windows and leave the card in the highest mode available to see that same mode work with XFree86. I know it's gross... -F.
