You may also need to try different hardware configurations. For
example, if you have a second IDE controller, try moving the CD-ROM to
that instead. For that matter, triple-check that your hard drive and
CD-ROM are properly jumpered, there have been some reports that DOS is
more forgiving of mis-jumpered drives. If there's two drives on one
controller, one must be jumpered as `master', the other as `slave.'
If there's one drive on a controller, it must be jumpered as `lonely.'
