Alas, mine is still very flakey.  I've kept it in the machine in order
to try analyzing the problem some time later, but i've meanwhile
switched back to my old 8-bit 3C503 since i needed a reliable Ethernet
card in order to get my NFS diskless client up & running (which was
basically impossible with the 3C590, regardless of whether using your
patch or not).

When it's hanging, it doesn't unwedge itself.  Re-ifconfig'ing is the
only way out.
