I got it running... turned out to be

 1st: -lrpc
 2nd: the non availability of the rand48 family of functions
      BTW, does anybody know if rand48 will be implemented in
      future releases of BSD/OS?

      If there should be a need for an lrand48 you could drop
      me a note (I compiled one out of parts of FreeBSD-2.1's
      libc).
