If you really have them, put together a benchmark suite. | > What, it isn't easy? It takes time? You have to make it portable? | > You have to test it on a bunch of different platforms? You have to | > gather a bunch of data? You have to let people tell you you did it wrong? | > You can't handle that? | > | I am not interested, simply because they do what I want... Measure the | performance of the system for MY QUALITY CONTROL needs. If I can do it, | CERTAINLY someone like you with your benchmarking credentials could do | so also... Am I wrong? Are you up to it? | | I do not publish my stuff simply because it is not an interest of mine, but | ONLY a tool. Very seldom, have I publically pronounced performance figures | from these benchmarks. Additionally, I have NOT said that FreeBSD is | superior only because of a single benchmark in my suite... I can tell you | individual performance figures from them, but certainly conclusions about | the merits of the OSes are hard to distinguish. This is definitely true | when there is only a difference of 10% or so... Unfortunately, as long as your benchmarks are not available and lmbench is, people will continue to use lmbench. If you are dissatisfied with lmbench, I think it's important to get another benchmark published and available. Note to the Linux folks: There are other benchmarks available, for instance Netperf. I know that Larry McVoy has done some measurements with Linux and Fast Ethernet, but there are no such results in the Netperf database. The only Fast Ethernet results are one for Solaris 2.5/Ultra-1/170E, submitted by Casper Dik, and one for FreeBSD-2.1/Pentium-133, submitted by myself. How about submitting some Linux results for Fast Ethernet also? The Netperf page is at http://www.cup.hp.com/netperf/NetperfPage.html Steinar Haug, Nethelp consulting, sthaug@nethelp.no
