Apart from whether the OS is stable enough for this role we also need to know whether the Adaptek local-bus SCSI controller would work. I had a brief look through agate.berkeley.edu including the unofficial FAQ and INSTALLATION.NOTES and they only mention the Adaptec 1542 and Seagate/Future Domain boards. I'm told the 1542 is quite expensive (A$600) but I've got no idea why this is so - our local clone dealer says that their local-bus SCSI controller, quite reasonably priced at A$195, is an Adaptek one though no model was mentioned. Apart from the price, the local-bus card should give better performance with a fast disk, Fujitsu 1G. Eventually we may end up with a commercial UN*X box which is why we want to invest in a SCSI disk that could be moved onto either a Mac or UN*X box. A related question is whether 386BSD can _easily_ use a DAT drive for backup (remember I'm a novice). The only netnews machine I have _convenient_ access to doesn't have this group, so I'd appreciate email copies of any reply postings. cheers, X500: @c=AU [I'm about to update VTHRC entries, soon...] @o=University of Queensland @ou=Physiology and Pharmacology Department @ou=Vision Touch and Hearing @cn=Danny Thomas @rfc822Mailbox=vthrc@cc.uq.oz.au
