I don't have the book you named, but I do have a number of machines running FreeBSD 2.1R, so I'll base my comments on my own experience and the installations done on my systems. First, tar has nothing at all to do with symlinks, so I can't figure where such a command could have come from. Tar is a "Tape ARchiver" and now refers to a means of compressing a group of files into one "holding" file. Second, all of my installations have a separate /var slice in addition to the /usr slice. There is no /usr/var directory. All in all, the descriptions you have given don't fit Unix in general or FreeBSD in particular. If you hadn't named a book, I would suspect someone of perpetrating a harmful, impractical joke. -- Ken Are you interested in | byte-sized education | http://www.play-hookey.com over the Internet? |
