I myself am working on the same problem. Before I connect to my ISP, I
can ping any machine on our net. But when I connect via PPP I get same
results as you do plus I am unable to ping anything inside or outside
my network on the FreeBsd machine. I get a time out or the ping just
hangs.

P.S. I have no official IP or domain name or network is just an
Intranet. Using 10.0.0 as net and 255.255.255.0 as mask. But shouldn't
I be able to use the FreeBsd machine as a gateway?

Still working on the problem.
