You will notice, however, a stunning drop in speed when you try this.  A
couple weeks ago I was having _fun_ installing from the Walnut Creek
cdrom v2.1 to a Pentium Pro - before I abandoned all hope of using IDE-
anything, and turning the cache off was one idea I tried.  That turned
out to have no effect on anything but my patience; my real problem
was that I could never get back to the ide cdrom drive after the install
had completed, and unfortunately, there was always one more package to
add.  So I went pure scsi, disabling all on-board ide, and went merrily
on my way - until I decided that a jaz drive would make a really good
backup mechanism.  Ouch.  Square one revisited.  Good luck.
