|Are we all talking about ijppp (not pppd) ?  ijppp certainly doesn't
|override the timeout in the chat script - not in the 2.1-RELEASE version.

In IIJPPP have three timeout statements.  One before chat, one in chat, and
one after (in the link-up script).  If I remove the one after, the line is
closed 180 seconds after dialing -- oddly enough, this is precisely the
value of the chat timeout.  I'm running 2.1 release.
