Start pppd with both the device and speed as parameters. For example, my
modem is on COM2 and I start pppd in /etc/rc.local as the command:

	pppd /dev/cuaa1 115200

The chat script is identified on the "connect" line of /etc/ppp/options.

This arrangement works fine for my full-time connection to my ISP.
