I was the one who asked in the original case. It ended up just being easiest to back up all that was near and dear to my heart (stuff that didnt ship with the OS), then install freebsd from scratch. The install program did a really good job of finding the tarballs on the second drive without me having to give it any hints. I was up and going in about 45 minutes (including time to restore backups). It didnt seem to be worth the hassle to keep the filesystems, since I was already making the backups. If you dont want to make backups, I would strongly urge you to reconsider that decision. Even if you have to bum a tape drive off of a friend, its not advisable to install an operating system without making backups. So im happily trying out freebsd, after 23 months on netbsd.
