The way I handle rootly system requirements when I am not at the console (only device on our system which allows root login) is by means of the "su" command and only when I dialin to the system ( I don't use it across the internet as anyone with a "sniffer" could find the system's root password and thereby remove one level of security in obtaining rootly power).
