I have a number of both of these types of these controllers running
on several different FreeBSD systems here.  In general, I find the
2940's to be more tolerant of long cables/many devices and the
810's (plus driver) seem to work better with my older Exabyte
(EXB-8200) and Wangtek tape drives.
