My suggestions are:
  - Run the connection at a maximum of 19200bps,
  - get an external DMA-type serial port card with hw flow control, or
  - put this PPP function on a faster cpu.

The Sparc 1+ cpu is having trouble with the interrupts generated by the cpu
serial ports on this 38400bps connection, and can't keep up.
