So I learned when I actually took the time to look it up after Brian e-mailed me on the topic. However, one point: 224.0.0.0 (the multicast address in /etc/sysconfig for 2.1R) is forbidden/unused on the Internet. I had simply been under the mistaken impression that the rest of that Class-C-sized group was also out of bounds.
