It's a problem in msdosfs which crops up with only certain DOS partitions. It can't read the partition and this is why the gunzip falls over when it's fed unexpectedly bogus data. Only two known solution are: 1. Fix MSDOSFS - this is currently being worked on by Robert Nordier but doesn't help you much at all. 2. Find another installation method. Floppies?
