[Tom Torrance at home]

| : | I have a domain with a couple of other computers on the LAN.
| : | My ISP is new to it and wants to run routed only, cause it's simple.
| : | I am pretty new to it too, but more adventurous.
| : | Both MYADDR and HISADDR can change from one call to the next.
| : | The static route works only for the computer with the interface
| : | on the ISP's domain.
| : | Can you give me some nethelp/advice?
|
| : If you use PPP, the answer is rather obvious: You get pppd to insert the
| : static route for you when it connects. Use the 'defaultroute' option. It
| : works for me.
|
| The default route does get set up. gated and routed apparently
| automatically poll the far end of the pt-to-pt link and never get
| a RIP response. They then tear down the default route.

Then the question is still the same: If pppd inserts a default for you
when the link comes up, *why* do you need to run gated or routed at all
on your machine? Are you saying that you have an internal network which
needs gated or routed? From your original posting it sounds like you
only have a couple of other computers, in which case you certainly dont'
need gated or routed.
