Normally, I just throw away the complete compilation directory before I start compiling the kernel to be extra-safe. Whilte I have no idea whether a "make depend" would do me any good, I always do that as well. I'll recompile (from scratch) both the last working and the non-working config to see whether they are just that (working vs. non-working). If so, I'll come back with a diff. If not, I'd still be greatful for a hint as to what is missing from the clearly non-working one.
