We have a WD "Elite" 8-bit ethernet board that won't retain its
settings (as set up by "ezsetup") after power off.

That's not supposed to happen, and believe me, it was a bitch to figure
out.

We sent it back and got another one that didn't have the problem.  Your
alternative is to use one of the two hard-wired setups that are strappable
on the card.
