Most things seem to work now, but there are a few problems I need to solve. Most of the boot time configuration is shown and described below. 1) On boot, my 3com 3c503 ethernet board is recognized, but I haven't figured out how to get my system to talk to the outside world. I've tried modifying /etc/networks, /etc/netstart and /etc/hosts. I put our router address (with a made up name; I don't know what it is called) in /etc/networks. I uncommented the ec0 ifconfig line in /etc/netstart and added in the actual address at some point. I put my host name and number in /etc/hosts. Could someone tell me exactly what I need to do to configure the network? (Incidentally, the board is definitely not talking to the outside world; when I try to telnet no packets ever go out and it eventually times out. I can telnet to my own host number of course.) Incidentally: nslookup still tells me on startup that my host number is 0.0.0.0. 2) When booting from the hard drive, 90% of the time the system freezes the first time it tries to read from the hard drive (before it ever boots). This problem does not occur when booting the MSDOS partition. Randomly pressing keys during the startup diagnostics may or may not be helpful in getting 386BSD to boot successfully... 3) When the system actually boots from the hard drive, the top floppy never turns off after the system checks to see if it contains a boot disk; any attempt to talk to either floppy crashes the system. This problem does not occur when I boot 386BSD from the floppy of course. Here is the system info: Some generic VGA card, 200 meg quantum PD210A HD with noname controller (whatever that is)--floppies plugged into noname card, Adaptec 1542B SCSI controller with SHARP JY700 5.12 optical drive, 3com 3c503 ethernet board. I've disabled the Adaptec BIOS and switched its unused floppy controller to the secondary address. Here's what it says at boot time, minus some stuff that scrolled off the top: wd0 <QUANTUM PD210A> at 0x1f0 irq 14 on isa as0 at 0x330 irq 11 drq 5 on isa ec0 address 02:60:8c:3d:b0:cf at 0x250 irq 9 on isa npx0 at 0xf0 irq 13 on isa as0: attached tgt 0 <SHARP JY700 MODC 5.12> disk as0b: not ready reading fsbn 0 (etc) Please ask me if there's any other information that might be useful in diagnosing the problem. Thanks for any help, David Pletcher dpletche@jarthur.claremont.edu
