Summary: How do I set XF86 up?

Hi,

I am running 2.0.5R, and have been for a while now :-) Yesterday I
setup a new system and decided it would be fun to run XFree86 on it,
and of course I ran into trouble. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Matrox Millenium on this machine, but the card didn't come with
any documentation. I don't think its a pirate copy :-) Seriously its
an OEM version, and the company which sold it to me said it was identical
to the normal version except it didn't come in a pretty box. I don't
have much need for a box, and I thought I'd save a few bucks...

So I'm configuring XF86, and don't have a clue. I select generic SVGA,
but the autodetect thinks my board has an Oak chip on it. Nothing works.
When I changed the XF86Config file to "generic VGA" and 300x200 things
came up. It was ugly, I was hating life. I was unable to get anything
better, and it occurs to me that many people are using this board and
are happy. Please point me in the right direction!

My 2.1.5 disk hasn't arrived, but I'll probably drag this box into work
and install over the Internet. So those of you who are saying "use the
current version dummy" can rest assured that I'm listening. But I'm
afraid that unless there is a install menu which says "Are you Jon Doran,
who is using a Matrox Millenium" I'm going to need a pointer or two. I
could figure it out given a lot of time, but I'd rather have a window
manager up first.

One specific question I have is "is there a way to run that nice
config script after the system is installed?".

Also, I'm sure I'll order the Motif package which is available. So
if I should just wait and configure it I will. $150 for a pretty window
manager isn't bad, I'd be really happy if it came with source ;-)

Thanks for everyone's time,
Jon Doran
