This time it is on a (as the subject line says) Gateway 2000 EISA 486DX2/50 with 16 MB RAM, UltraStor Ultra 24F SCSI host adaptor, and Maxtor 340SY 340 MB drive. With its default (as shipped) configuration, I made a 162 MB MS-DOS partition and when I booted the dist.fs floppy the hard drive wasn't detected. Reading through the trusty Gateway 2000 owner's manual, I saw some instructions for configuring the system for SCO, ISC, and AT&T UNIX. It said I should have the following settings: host adaptor: enabled BIOS address C8000 IRQ 14 ISA mode selection: primary drive mapping mode: 16 hd, 63 sctr, 2 drv (And of course I have "no drives" in my CMOS setup.) I tried these settings and dist.fs recognized the UltraStor. I was able to install 386BSD as usual, but it wouldn't boot from the hard drive. It keeps going into that reboot loop. (One time I even got a message saying to hit the reset button.) OK, I glanced through a list of supported SCSI controllers and didn't see this controller mentioned, but many controllers act like supported ones and my results with dist.fs lead me to believe that this controller will work. I don't have access to this machine on a regular basis, so I'd appreciate any help I can get before I give it another try. I have some specific questions, but I'll listen to just about any suggestion. - My system at home is fully patched. Should this take care of it? - Since it is EISA, will it need any special patches? - Is anyone else running 386BSD on this same type of system? If so, should I expect to experience more problems? A general question: - How can I make my own dist.fs? Thanks in advance, -- Jim H. * * James L. Henrickson | "I don't need a signature, I need a job!" * ujlh@sunyit.edu | BSCS, December 1992
