A shell account is an account where you get a shell after logging in. A
shell is a unix command interpreter (like command.com).

If your ISP supports SLIP/PPP, FreeBSD will have no problems. Have a
look in this usenet group, I posted my config files the other day.

As far as posting your own stuff, it's easy. You don't have a GUI front
end (unless you use netscape or the like), but if you're happy using ftp,
it'll do the trick.

IRC should be no problem, but I havn't mucked around with this (yet).

As far as finding the info, there's online documentation (/usr/share/doc),
but if you don't know unix at all (what's a shell account) I'd suggest
getting some books - Unix for dummies or the like - and finding out
the basics.

Remember, you can do everything with FreeBSD, and you can do it properly.
It's just not as polished as Win95 or OS/2 etc.
