I am currently running 2.1.5 release on my 486 AMD 5x86 133 Mhz processor OVERCLOCKED to 160 MHz (40 Mhz bus) on a MTI VLB Motherboard. FreeBSD runs fine with AMD technology, and I have no problem running my C programs on it. From my experience, I would guess that your problem is RAM based.
