First, in such a case of a dead terminal do a

^Jstty sane^J

(^J is line feed)
This gives you back a working tty. It doesn't solve the problem though.
Have you tried if there's a difference when doing a su - ?

You should carefully examine your TERM and stty settings.
Are you using rlogin or telnet?
