If the GENERIC installation kernel recognizes vx, I think it can't be used by sysinstall (I've not tested it, because I don't have 3c590). I added "vx" entry on my machine and recompiled it when I released our BootAsia L10N Japanese/Chinese boot floppy. I also re-enabled missing "fe" driver on i386/conf/GENERIC of this floppy.
