Certainly, the balance of Microsoft's efforts are geared towards "making a profit." I won't try to argue against you as a matter of degree. But also, Microsoft is providing services that a lot of people want. As an infrastructure for supporting many 3d graphics cards, Microsoft is a far superior resource to XFree86. Also, even though I don't like the price structure of XAccel's or Metrolink's X servers, they are still a better resource for doing OpenGL than is XFree86. If your goal is to have a UNIX-lookalike workstation on Intel hardware, then the services that XAccel and Metrolink provide seem a lot more reasonable. No company is in business solely to make profit. They have to provide services that people want. Otherwise, no profit. : If someone has to buy an X server rather than get it for free or some : time spend downloading it, it would be better to buy it from Sun : Microsystems... Solaris for example, will be fixed immediately should : there be a bug found by a user.. fixes have been known to be out VERY : quickly.. Arguing that people should buy Solaris rather than Microsoft, makes no sense from a pure $$$$ standpoint. It would seem that you either have a "religious" bias against Microsoft, or you have some assumptions about what the OS is going to get used for. Solaris is better at some things and carries a price tag for that. : Apart from that.. who needs to pay for an X server anyway? Xfree is : very capable. I use it almost every day on a pc running Linux with only : a 1 mb cirrus logic 5440M card - no flicker problems at all. It is not 3d graphics capable. Cheers, -- Brandon J.
