Upgrading to 3.0b7 made no difference, but then I found by looking through the mailing list archives that doing the following enabled Java to run (logged in as root): cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir (I've only tried one site so far, but believe it is an all-or-nothing problem.)
