First you should copy java_30 into /usr/local/lib/netscape.
Then as root type:
cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc
/usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir
chmod 444 fonts.dir
And then exit and restart your X server.
I did this with Netscape 3.06b (not the Gold version) and it works perfectly.
