I may be so far off of correct here that I'm just sticking my foot in a very uncomfortable place, but when I downloaded the /bin distribution (which is all you need) it came out to about 16 Megs. This took me a little over an hour on a 28.8 from ftp.freebsd.org. From this distribution, the install app performs a minor miracle and extracts over 100 megs of data. Go figure how it does this.
