you can.  Are you running gated?  Are you trying to redist your
routing information?

try ifconfig ef0 alias 205.10.5.126 netmask 255.255.255.224
(that syntax is from FreeBSD, not necessarily BSDI, since I 
don't have BSDI handy to check it on)
