I am in the process of setting up a FreeBSD server that is connected to my ISP via a permanent serial line. The server should be configured to set up the ppp connection without user interference after a reboot. Therefore I use ppp -auto. Also, I do a single ping to the outside world at startup, to wake the thing up. All seems well at first, but every 838839778...840935198 secs I get a timeout and the connection drops dead. (The timeout number keeps increasing, strangely enough...) The log file says: 08-23 13:39:31 [136] Using interface: tun0 08-23 13:39:32 [137] Listening at 3000. 08-23 13:39:32 [137] PPP Started. dial OK! login OK! 08-23 13:40:57 [137] LCP: state change Initial --> Closed 08-23 13:40:57 [137] LCP: state change Closed --> Stopped 08-23 13:40:58 [137] LCP: Received Configure Request (1) state = Stopped (3) 08-23 13:40:58 [137] MRU 552 08-23 13:40:58 [137] ACCMAP 00000000 08-23 13:40:58 [137] MAGICNUM e71f7a64 08-23 13:40:58 [137] PROTOCOMP 08-23 13:40:58 [137] ACFCOMP 08-23 13:40:58 [137] LCP: SendConfigReq 08-23 13:40:58 [137] ACFCOMP 08-23 13:40:58 [137] PROTOCOMP 08-23 13:40:58 [137] ACCMAP [6] 00000000 08-23 13:40:58 [137] MRU [4] 1500 08-23 13:40:58 [137] MAGICNUM [6] a37a4c0f 08-23 13:40:58 [137] LCP: SendConfigAck(Stopped) 08-23 13:40:58 [137] MRU 552 08-23 13:40:58 [137] ACCMAP 00000000 08-23 13:40:58 [137] MAGICNUM e71f7a64 08-23 13:40:58 [137] PROTOCOMP 08-23 13:40:58 [137] ACFCOMP 08-23 13:40:58 [137] LCP: state change Stopped --> Ack-Sent 08-23 13:40:58 [137] LCP: Received Configure Ack (1) state = Ack-Sent (8) 08-23 13:40:58 [137] LCP: state change Ack-Sent --> Opend 08-23 13:40:58 [137] LCP: LayerUp 08-23 13:40:58 [137] Phase: Authenticate 08-23 13:40:58 [137] his = 0, mine = 0 08-23 13:40:58 [137] Phase: Network 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPCP: state change Initial --> Closed 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPCP Up event!! 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPCP: SendConfigReq 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPADDR [6] 194.151.72.23 08-23 13:40:58 [137] COMPPROTO [6] 002d0f00 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPCP: state change Closed --> Req-Sent 08-23 13:40:58 [137] CCP: state change Initial --> Closed 08-23 13:40:58 [137] CCP Up event!! 08-23 13:40:58 [137] CCP: SendConfigReq 08-23 13:40:58 [137] CCP: state change Closed --> Req-Sent 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPCP: Received Configure Request (1) state = Req-Sent (6) 08-23 13:40:58 [137] COMPPROTO[6] 002d0f00 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPADDR[6] 194.151.68.6 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPCP: SendConfigAck(Req-Sent) 08-23 13:40:58 [137] COMPPROTO[6] 002d0f00 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPADDR[6] 194.151.68.6 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPCP: state change Req-Sent --> Ack-Sent 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPCP: Received Configure Ack (1) state = Ack-Sent (8) 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPCP: state change Ack-Sent --> Opend 08-23 13:40:58 [137] IPCP: LayerUp. 08-23 13:40:58 [137] myaddr = 194.151.72.23 hisaddr = 194.151.68.6 08-23 13:40:58 [137] OsLinkup: 194.151.68.6 08-23 13:40:59 [137] LCP: Received Protocol Reject (2) state = Opend (9) 08-23 13:40:59 [137] -- Protocol (80fd) was rejected. 08-23 13:40:59 [137] CCP: LayerFinish. 08-23 13:40:59 [137] CCP: state change Req-Sent --> Stopped 08-25 03:06:38 [137] Disconnected! 08-25 03:06:38 [137] Connect time: 840935198 secs 08-25 03:06:38 [137] Phase: Dead 08-25 03:06:38 [137] LCP: LayerDown 08-25 03:06:38 [137] OsLinkdown: 194.151.68.6 08-25 03:06:38 [137] Phase: Terminate 08-25 03:06:38 [137] LCP: state change Opend --> Starting 08-26 11:33:11 [136] Using interface: tun0 08-26 11:33:11 [137] Listening at 3000. 08-26 11:33:11 [137] PPP Started. dial OK! login OK!
