The first ide controller (wdc0) has two IDE drives attached : to it. I installed both Linux and FreeBSD recently, and I love both systems. I got both systems to work just fine with my 8x Atapi CD drive. For my FreeBSD 2.1 system, I installed from the BSDisc sold by InfoMagic. I used the atapi.flp kernel to boot and run the setup program. : I recompiled the kernel refelecting the above configuration, however, at : startup the kernel does, while probing for the second IDE controller : (wdc1), not recognize it, and says "wdc1: not found at etc...". Are you sure you uncommented the line for the Atapi device driver in the config file for your kernel? Of course, you must do this. I got FreeBSD to work with my 8x Atapi CD drive without any problems. My only dissatification is that my 8x Atapi CD drive spins way too slowly when using the Atapi CD driver from FreeBSD; it acts more like a 2X CD drive rather than an 8X CD drive. However, I'm not really sure if the problem is the CD, or the Atapi driver. Patrick
