Probably not. Setting up a FreeBSD box as a gateway is straight forward. Simple and flexible. Definitely gives you more possibilities. Take the portmaster and the pipeline (even the 400x series), to my knowledge you can't do BGP4. You can't even do that if you go with a Cisco 25xx for full routes. A FreeBSD[Linux/BSDI/NetBSD] box running gated with memory and enough cpu cycles (a fast 486 or pentium) can do it well! You can add more ports easily. Besides, support is good, through USENET and maillists as well as direct to manufacturer (ET and SDL) ... try Ascend's support sometime :) I'm a firm believer in "real" routers, I received at BLN from Bay networks 2 months ago (replacing a Cisco 25xx and a BSDI with SDL N2/CSU [dual T1 sync]). Besides, I don't believe there is still any real routers with a "P" as their first letter (didn't Proteon get out of the market??) Setting up a BSD box for a single external link + ethernet is simple: kernel reconfiguration for sync card, setup network configuration, reboot. It's just running ifconfig on the interface and setting a default route.
