Date: Thu, 29 Aug 1996 12:14:14 -0700 Organization: Will Vinton Studios Lines: 36 Message-ID: <3225EC06.77879249@vinton.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: borg.vinton.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.0b7 (X11; I; Linux 2.0.2 i586) hi. i'm sort of desperate at this point, so i thought i'd ask you all if anybody's had this problem before me. i'm trying to install NetBSD 1.1 in a Compaq ProSignia 486 system that used to be a netware server. i've installed an Adaptec 1542CP board and a 2-gig HP disk drive, plus two 3c509 network cards. everything seems to be configured properly, and i'm able to format, mount and use the disk drive when booted from the kernel floppy. however, i can't seem to get the system to boot from its hard disk. the NetBSD boot loader does get installed, and that comes up on boot, and its default boot string is wd(0,a)/netbsd. that doesn't work, and it doesn't really seem right anyway. all of the following boot strings cause the boot process to hang: wd(0,a)/netbsd sd(0,a)/netbsd hd(0,a)/netbsd ... and if i try hd(1,a)/netbsd, i get a looping string of errors about head, track and cylinder zero -- seems like i'm accessing a nonexistent disk in that case. are there other boot strings i could try, or flags i could specify to get more info? i am pretty sure i got the geometry correct, using the numbers provided by the kernel boot messages. (the drive has 2630 cyls, 18 heads, 87 secs/cyl, and 512 bytes/sec.) if there's a non-obvious aspect to obtaining these values, i probably missed it. any tips, suggestions or warnings would be greatly appreciated. -mykle-
