When I was finished, I ended up with an /etc/fstab of: /dev/wd0a / ufs rw 1 1 /dev/wd0s1f /usr ufs rw 1 1 /dev/wd0s1e /var ufs rw 1 1 proc /proc procfs rw 0 0 /dev/wcd0c /cdrom cd9660 ro,noauto 0 0 As you can see I made the CD ROM "noauto". I then attached a second IDE hard disk, replacing the CD ROM and added the line: /dev/wd1s1 /disk2 ufs rw 1 1 Since then I have not changed the hardware at all. Now I want to be able to read the CD ROM again, so I cut the last line out, and rebooted. No problem. Except when I enter "mount /cdrom" I get the error: cd9660: /dev/wcd0c: Device not configured Just be be sure I check the directory, and sure enough the block special device file is there. All this time I HAVE the FreeBSD CD in the CD drive. So I reckon the problem must be when I booted -c to disable probes on non-existant hardware. Here is what dmesg says: CPU: i486DX (486-class CPU) real memory = 12582912 (12288K bytes) avail memory = 10629120 (10380K bytes) Probing for devices on the ISA bus: sc0 at 0x60-0x6f irq 1 on motherboard sc0: VGA color <16 virtual consoles, flags=0x0> ed0: disabled, not probed. ed1 at 0x300-0x31f irq 3 on isa ed1: address 00:80:c8:2b:d5:3c, type NE2000 (16 bit) sio0 at 0x3f8-0x3ff irq 4 on isa sio0: type 16550A sio1: disabled, not probed. sio2: disabled, not probed. sio3: disabled, not probed. lpt0 at 0x378-0x37f irq 7 on isa lpt0: Interrupt-driven port lp0: TCP/IP capable interface lpt1 not found at 0xffffffff lpt2 not found at 0xffffffff mse0: wrong signature ff mse0 not found at 0x23c fdc0 at 0x3f0-0x3f7 irq 6 drq 2 on isa fdc0: NEC 72065B fd0: 1.44MB 3.5in wdc0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7 irq 14 on isa wdc0: unit 0 (wd0): <Maxtor 7273 AT> wd0: 260MB (534336 sectors), 1012 cyls, 16 heads, 33 S/T, 512 B/S wdc1 not found at 0x170 bt0: disabled, not probed. uha0: disabled, not probed. ahc1: disabled, not probed. ahb0: disabled, not probed. aha0: disabled, not probed. aic0: disabled, not probed. nca0: disabled, not probed. nca1: disabled, not probed. sea0: disabled, not probed. wt0: disabled, not probed. mcd0: disabled, not probed. mcd1: disabled, not probed. matcdc0: disabled, not probed. scd0: disabled, not probed. ie0: disabled, not probed. ep0: disabled, not probed. ix0: disabled, not probed. le0: disabled, not probed. lnc0: disabled, not probed. lnc1: disabled, not probed. ze0: disabled, not probed. zp0: disabled, not probed. npx0 on motherboard npx0: 387 emulator Which of the disabled devices do I need to reactivate? (Don't forget it is a ATAPI CD ROM). Or I am I going in the wrong direction? The CD ROM is a Hitachi CDR-7730 with which I have seen several reports in this ng of people having problems. However I could do the installation using it - so. It is attached as a slave to the one IDE controller, so should have shown up after the boot disk. The drive is setup as a slave and has power etc, and a FreeBSD CD loaded. Many thanks for any assistance, Stephen Drumm Broadstone, Dublin 7 http://www.iol.ie/~sdrumm sdrumm@iol.ie
