I've tried many different modems in my time and it's one of the best price/performance modems there is. It has been completely reliable for me connecting to different BBS, net providers, and online services and they all use different modems on their end. I've had more problems with more expensive modems (I won't mention names so as to avoid flames) dropping the line and such. The Sportster just simply works. Every time. I have heard many a complaint about them on the net but until I see it myself first hand I will continue to recommend them. Many of the 'problems' people post were due to an error on their part. They heard about a supposed problem with a certain ROM version and just assumed that was causing their problem. It was easier for them to lay the blame on the modem than on themselves. Don't just trash the line because you've heard about a problem at some point. Every manufacturer has problems at one time or another. Under typical line conditions, you'd be hard pressed to find a modem in the same price range that performed on par with the Sportster.... -Dave Just my 2c....
