I see that HP and Conner are advertising 4GB (uncompressed) SCSI
tape drives for around £ 220, which seems pretty good. Has anyone
tried them with *BSD?

Normally I would assume that something sold as a SCSI tape drive would
behave like a SCSI tape drive, but I've used HP's "SCSI" scanners so
my confidence isn't great.

The drives are HP (Colorado) T4000s and Conner TSM4000.
